The district health staff will perform the following state-required health screenings. If you DO NOT wish the health staff to perform the screenings, you may substitute a professional examination performed by a health care provider of your choice. Please contact your campus nurse for questions or further instructions.

The results of these screenings may indicate that your child needs additional diagnostic evaluation. Referrals to physicians will be made as needed. Parents are urged to obtain appropriate medical care following a school screening referral and return the completed referral and results to the school nurse.

These are required for all Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1 st , 3 rd , 5 th and 7 th grade students, as well as new students who enroll in the district after screenings have been performed. If students fail the first screening, they will be rescreened. If the student fails the second screening, a referral will be sent to the parent or guardian for follow-up visit with a physician.

Spinal screening is a state requirement for schools. Girls are screened in 5th and 7th grade. Boys are screened in 8th grade only. Spinal screening is used to detect abnormalities that may be indicative of conditions such as scoliosis, kyphosis, or lordosis (abnormal curvatures of the spinal column). This screening is done in a private area by district health staff such as a nurse or clinic aid. Information letters along with an explanation of the screening will be sent home by the campus to the parent or guardian before the screening is performed. If you do not wish to have your student screened, please notify the campus nurse and submit a request. You may provide a current screen from a physician in place of the school screening. 

This is required for all 1st , 3rd , 5th and 7th grade students and is usually performed at the same time as vision and hearing screening. Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) is a discoloration and thickening of the skin on the back of the neck that may indicate high levels of insulin levels and insulin resistance and is considered a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. If the AN marker is noted, then the student will have blood pressure, height and weight measured individually. A referral will be sent to the parent or guardian for follow-up visit with a physician.
